SEOUL, South Korea -- U.S. semiconductor giant Intel Corp. signed a letter of intent Thursday to invest $100 million in South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.

Rambus Gets Another Vote of Confidence From Intel (Oct. 19)

Under the proposed transaction, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel will acquire convertible bonds exchangeable for common stock representing approximately 1% of Samsung Electronics' outstanding common stock.

Samsung Electronics has agreed to use the proceeds from the Intel investment and additional funds to invest in Direct Rambus dynamic random access memory, or RDRAM, fabrication, assembly and testing, Samsung said.

RDRAM memory chips are used to temporarily store programs and data when computers are switched on. The Korean semiconductor maker said it is already shipping sample RDRAM devices and will be ready for volume production in the second quarter of 1999.

Samsung Electronics said the proposed transaction is subject to the approval of Intel's and Samsung Electronics' board of directors, the Korean government, and agreement on definitive documents. Full approval is expected by the beginning of February.
