G'day all - on a lighter side, I got Red Herring's Catch Of The Day today:
CATCH OF THE DAY: Picks and shovels
You want to really get in on the Internet economy? Then don't forget Microsoft -- or Intel, Cisco, Lucent, and Nortel. These amazing companies are building the *real* Internet. They're not reinventing commerce, as Amazon.com or eBay are, or building new online brands, as Yahoo is. But these are the companies that make the operating systems, hardware platforms, and networking equipment upon which Yahoo, Amazon, and eBay run their businesses.
It's incredibly hard to build a consumer brand -- online or off. And while we're expecting several great Internet IPOs this year, we're not holding out for dozens of eBays. Instead, there will be a mix of consumer Internet plays, infrastructure companies, and tools vendors. Are the Web site tool companies Vignette and Allaire as sexy as uBid and GeoCities? Nope. But there's a value in selling shovels to gold miners.

[poster note: the boldface is mine]
Considering Nortel Networks has already begun working on internet2, one could say "this is not your father's telecom equipments company anymore" <G>
