Typically the download is a self-installing exe file; you
just execute it and it installs. I don't recall offhand
the way matrox driver downloads work, though since I just got
a couple of Millenium g200s yesterday (thank you, TJT),
I'll be doing it myself. There are usually install
instructions on the web site, though.

I would put the download elsewhere than on my desktop if
I were you.

Once you get the correct driver installed, you should see
MGA properties as a tab in display properties or as a
separate choice when you right-click the desktop. In there
somewhere (Monitor tab I guess) you will have a choice
of monitor properties, such as VESA or MGA. The MGA
choice opens a database of known monitor types. If it
has your monitor, select it, and it will know about
resolutions and refresh rates. If it doesn't, you can
make a custom entry of your own by manually entering
what you want (preferably from the monitor owner's manual).

Sorry, gotta run. This is mostly from memory. If you
have more trouble post back. I'll be doing it this
weekend, probably.
