Have you seen the Robert Duvall film "The Apostle". There are many different kinds of fundamentalists, evangelicals, and pentecostalists. The fact is that segments of the Bible belt culture promoted "race- mixing", even while others were for the "peculiar institution" of segregation. (In fact, ironically, John Brown, though a New Englander, was a fire- and- brimstone Baptist). And Pat Robertson continues the Pentacostalist tradition by leading an integrated ministry, with an African- American co-host on the "700 Club". No, racism is not the animating force for the religious right, it is the "social issues".
