The mouthed "I love you" struck me as strange and ill-considered. Political speeches, like all other forms of fiction, rely on the willing suspension of disbelief. Any time you have something that is incongruous and obviously contrived, it tends to shatter that willing suspension of disbelief. I would think that even the most diehard Clinton partisans were at least vaguely embarrassed to see such a gratuitously staged moment. But I don't know; I stopped being surprised by the shallowness of their perceptions a long time ago. -BLT
