In my former career, I worked the retail industry (for 20 yrs.) At times, we were selling items below cost during price wars. Many people thought that we were crazy and would go broke. As well, when the store managers looked their profit statements they would think that we were giving away the farm and that the roof was falling in. What many of them did not realize is that that our buyers had negotiated pretty sweet VIA's (volume added incentives) that went to the administrative bottom line. This was only one of the many, many different ways that a retailer (traditional or on-line) could make money. This is why our company continued to surprise with our earnings. There is definitely more to the story than what you are harping on. If you understood the business that this company is in, you would realize why some people are very positive on the model they are building.
