I'm not a great expert on wireless either so I hope I get corrected on any error.
I see wireless & satelite internet as being a viable option for internet access at the user level in 5 years or so. I think it will probably be used wherever cable or DSL cant.The fundamental backbone will stay optical.
Everything I've learned so far says that it has the potential to have a lower cost structure since you dont have to run the wires. However I can imagine many many problems with bandwidth considering how crowded the frequency spectrum is.
It has always seemed to be impossible that direct satellite links could possibly manage the bandwidth that widely used broadband is going to require.
