The "radicals" believe that no legitimate distinction can be based on appearance, once the zygote exists as a unique, evolving organism. I personally favor passing the issue back to the states, because it is so contentious (which would still involve overturning Roe v. Wade), and I am ambivalent about where the line should be drawn, but there is a certain philosophical elegance to the argument that the moment of conception is the bright line. After all, we do not say the infant is not a human being because it has no teeth, has a disproportionate head, and hasn't developed secondary sexual characteristics.
