With regard to NT 4.0 failing, nothing. But that part shows at least how tough it is to get certification. This certification isn't just a quick look-over and really does mean something from a security standpoint.

What I found interesting was what was said at the end...

Agencies can ask for a waiver, but the reality is that none have bothered - the lack of FIPS 140-1 products in the market seems to be excuse enough.

"FIPS 140-1 is very important, but there aren't enough products to buy," says the Defense Department's Schaeffer.

What this appears to mean is that government agencies are still free to purchase non-certified equipment without even getting a waiver. This makes me wonder if AETI's government contracts are really hinging on certification which is what I think has been implied. But I don't know for sure.

Regardless, certification alone will bring credibility to the company. Whether it'll actually have an immediate effect on sales I don't know.
