If you want to see a perfect example of the locals taking out stop losses, check out this graph of ETEC for the last several days:

The action was kind of slow near the close the other day, and the sentiment was a bit bearish due to an intraday announcement by KLAC. The market makers quickly took 'er down 10 points picking off stop losses. The next day the market opened exactly where it had been. The only difference was that the players who had stop loss orders in had lost their shares at a price well below market.

I remember a case a couple years ago where a stock opened at 30, closed at 32, and a guy I knew lost his stock intraday at 18 because he had a stop loss order in. Keep those stop losses on paper!
