Richard, I am not surprised you were not able to pan gold near Cripple Creek. No one ever has. That is why the Cripple Creek district was so far behind the other Colorado Gold areas. The ore was in tellurides and not the traditional quartz. However, a fire assay of the ore always worked. The problem was finding the ore.

In Cripple Creek, they could not find the ore.

In Arizona they have found millions of tons of ore but only certain companies or people know the right way to assay it. Of course these people are all in canada or australia.
