Richard, I just discovered the following article from WSJ-online in which one of the researchers from U. Wash. at least entertains the long range possibility that if neural stems can become blood, then why not vice versa

"This shows that the mature stem cells are a lot more plastic than we imagined ... they can produce a lot more cell types than was previously thought," said Christopher Bjornson, a researcher at the University of Washington, Seattle, on the team. "A bone marrow stem cell might be able to produce tissue for the brain ... and the skin stem cell might be able to make other cell types," Bjornson said.
