For anybody living in Eastern Europe during and after the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, it was obvious that the Russian Empire has started to disintegrate. It was only the Western policy of detente, appeasement and financial/ economic aid to Russia that delayed the collapse and prolonged the agony of the enslaved nations. All the analysts from CIA, IMF, the World Bank, etc. had to do was to relate to the black market rate of exchange for the US dollar, DM and the price of one pack of Marlboros to realize that everything was nothing but a huge Potemkin village.
