News.Com ran this after the close, maybe some folks saw it early, who knows. I've seen other articles similar to this one, so it should be old news...

Intel share of chip market slips By Bloomberg News Special to CNET News.com January 22, 1999, 5:05 p.m. PT
Intel's share of the microprocessor market fell to 75.7 percent in the fourth quarter as rival Advanced Micro Devices stole business with its cheaper products, a research firm said.
The No. 1 chipmaker's market share slipped from 87.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 1997, according to preliminary numbers from International Data Corporation. AMD's share rose to 15.5 percent from 6.6 percent in the year-earlier quarter, IDC said.
Intel has been hammered by AMD's low-priced chips, which were snapped up by personal computer makers looking to satiate demand for cheap computers, especially those costing less than $1,000. Intel was late to that market, coming out with a slow Celeron chip in early 1998 and failing to unveil a faster, more competitive version until later in the year.
Intel now has introduced even faster Celeron processors and has cut prices aggressively. The company has said it intends to win back its share in the low end of the market. AMD's chips are found in more than half of PCs that cost less than $1,000.
Intel's fourth-quarter market share is lower than the 78.7 percent it held in the third quarter of 1998. AMD's fourth-quarter share rose from the 12.7 percent it held in the third quarter.
Intel still nabbed most of the dollars in the $22.4 billion microprocessor market in 1998, IDC said. Intel garnered 92 percent of the revenue, while AMD had about 5.6 percent. |
