What about the ancient concept of "quickening?" That is the basis for the Roe v. Wade trimester ruling, it's really ancient history, I suppose, but that makes it more respectable, in my opinion.

None of us feels any moral dilemma about unfertilized ova or sperm which have not made it to a fertile ova. I think if a group of citizens sat down to a debate, most would think that a zygote or early embryo did not have the full rights that a completely developed fetus has. I know reasonable minds can differ, I have argued this point with a number of people, but by and large, the distinction seems to be drawn at a few weeks' development. An embryo with brain waves is different than an embryo whose stem cells will someday form into a brain, physiologically. It's irrefutable.

I understand that morally, one may not see a difference.
