Mav-man and all:

I think there are other reasons for Intel tumbling, but this whole ID# issue seems to me to be a bit overblown. I mean, the benefits from this seemingly simple technology could be immense! All I've heard about it, though, are the 'privacy' concerns.

This is the best the ACLU can do:

'But making it possible for people to turn off
the ID code doesn't solve the problem, said
Barry Steinhardt, a privacy expert at the
American Civil Liberties Union. "Computers
are already too complicated for most
people," he said. "For the average
consumer, it's difficult enough to know that
this data will be gathered and that they will
be tracked, let alone how to get the
software . . . to turn this thing off.'

He's making it sound like flicking a switch is designing a nuclear reactor! And how many people won't be aware of this issue with the press it's getting?

Is it just me, or is this really ridiculous? Intel = big brother?

So maybe the government should dictate Intel's product designs to avoid totalitarianism?

I do think that it would be best for Intel to design a work-around whereby the thing could be turned on/off like a toggle. The rebooting business will be a detriment.
