Even if the numbers of copies favor NT, I suspect the dollar value is still heavily skewed towards Unix. You can pick up a copy of NT pretty cheap just to play with (e.g. I've got it on a machine here, and I'm just one guy on his own -- as I recall the upgrade to 3.51 server version was less than $100), and a lot of IT folks would consider themselves remiss if they didn't at least evaluate it, given all the noise Microsoft makes. That doesn't necessarily mean NT is in production use, or that very many shops have dropped their Unix licenses. As I recall, NT is (was?) also bundled in the Developer Pack (I dropped my subscription some time ago, so this may not be the case now -- does anybody know? Again as I recall, I initially got on the upgrade path for both server and workstation versions at pretty low cost via that program, either via a direct inclusion in the Pack or some side offer), and MS may also be counting those copies (again, does anybody know?).
IMHO, NT is primarily displacing NetWare, not Unix.
Sorry this is a little disjointed, but I kept remembering things to add and just put them in as parentheticals.
