EC,

90% of the Ni deposits are either Archean or Proterzoic. The gneiss host is no coincidence, it is a sulfur source. The Ni is contained within the Olivine matrix (olivine gabbro etc.) and to create Ni-sulfide mineralization (i.e. concentrate the Ni-material into economic quantities) requires the olivine rich solution (magma) to come in contact with a sulfur source (Gneiss contains abundant sulfur).

Along these lines, the S-source was suggested by Naldrett to be upper crustal because once the sulfide fluid was created (Ni from olivine+S from host) is could not travel far (relatively speaking via fluid mechanics). Sulfur isotopic studies at Voisey were inconclusive as at many other sites. Off the top of my head I can't think of any mantle-derived S in Canadian Ni-deposits????

The argument between Gabbro (Norite) VS Olivine Gabbro (Norite) VS Troctolite (much over-stated and usually incorrect chemically speaking) is somewhat over-stated. Without a petrographic analysis the Pl/Px/Ol ratios cannot be determined and for exploration purposes the point is moot because all or any of these rocks, under the correct conditions carry more than enough elemental Ni to make a deposit. Core logging and most mapping programs can never get it straight and as the prospectors say "the Ni is where you find it!"

Regards

P.S. Just exchanging info... still don't know much about the technical info from this play
