One of the first men to benefit from the GPs' rebellion against Government limits on prescribing Viagra on the NHS says he feels like "a very lucky bloke".

He went to his doctor expecting to pay for the anti-impotence drug - but came away with an NHS prescription after his GP said he was following British Medical Association advice to defy the effective ban and issue the drug to anyone in clinical need of it.

And the GP said the man's case "highlighted the absurdities" of new rules for prescribing Viagra announced on Thursday by Health Secretary Frank Dobson.

Dr Jonathan Reggler became one of the first GPs to defy the ban when he issued his patient with an NHS prescription for Viagra at his surgery in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

The man, who is in his late 60s and did not wish to be named, said: "I had previously gone to a private clinic and paid a lot of money for a health check and assessment and so on.

"I had heard about this new wonder drug and decided to give it a whirl, so I bought eight tablets. "It did everything it promised to and I was very impressed - as was my wife."

He added: "I went to Dr Reggler to ask him if he could prescribe them to me privately - and then he told me that he could give them to me on the NHS because he didn't agree with Mr Dobson's advice.

"I was extremely pleased and have come away with eight tablets for a lot less money

"Dr Reggler is a very good GP who is ahead of his time and I feel like a very lucky bloke. This is an effective treatment. I had gone to a private clinic before and they had suggested injections, but
that doesn't really suit the situation.

"With Viagra, you can have a good dinner and a nice bottle of wine, and then if the occasion arises, I can pop a pill and do something about it."
