What's the worse that could happen??
Go back to the 1950's (after much readjustment)?
I'm not so worried....if we would rather think of Y2K as a challenge as opposed to some catastrophe, we could muster our strength as a nation that pulls together in adversity when properly prepared. (I think that nation still exists..)
Anyway... I think NGB may have screwed up. They didn't want to panic the public (probably policy directives from on high).
I don't believe they were trying to be overly conspiratorial about it, but if this was "hush-hush" info, they would have labeled it Top Secret (with an SCI caveat/codename) and it would have been locked up in a certain safe located in a certain secure area (that I used to work in). They would likely have to put it there, for if I'm not mistaken, that area was the only area in Arlington Hall rated for the high level, "God's eyes only", stuff.
Since it wasn't classified and these guys didn't feel they were violating any secrecy act by discussing it (which could get them thrown into the stockade and their careers ruined), I suggest that it was considered "politically sensitive" requiring proper handling for public consumption.
And the fact that this guy Farah has apparently stirred up a friggin' hornet's nest there probably have a few officers/EM's doing a lot of verbal dancing around.
But the important thing about all this is that these guys spoke up and forced NGB to "adjust fire" and reapproach the public relations side (with Farah's help).
That is democracy at work and a sign of how difficult it would be for any true conspiracy to gather enough momentum to execute a takeover without someone like Farah, Drudge, or Jerry Springer catching a whiff of what's up and trying to stir things up. Farah and the other "investigative reporters" are more interested in building their reputations amongst their peers and seeking notoriety.
They are putting "notches" in their word processors, that's all.
