Harvey, this is another thing about the "witness" issue that makes it dubious. The Starr technique has always been to leverage his version of the "truth" by bringing up the whole inquistional gamut of legal entanglements against anybody who goes against the line he's constructing. Susan McDougal and Julie Steele are the most obvious examples, besides Lewinsky. The House impeachment case is dependent on judicious choice of what parts of Lewinsky's testimony to believe, and what parts to discount. I'm sure Starr would like to maintain maximum leverage here, but if I were her lawyer, I'd just tell her to take the 5th unless somebody above and beyond Starr was giving her immunity. As this story indicates, Starr and Co. are hard at work trying to make sure Lewinsky says just what they want her to say, but I wonder if they can pull this off. Would the House or Senate be willing to do the Susan McDougal contempt thing with her at this point? Politically, I doubt it.
