Web outpaces catalogs for holiday shopping

A survey of holiday shoppers shows the Internet was the third most
popular vehicle for gift buying. Brand-name stores were tops with
88 percent of the respondents to the Zona Research Inc. study.
Discount retailers were the choice of 70 percent; the Net drew 53
percent while paper catalogs were used by 40 percent. The report
also says online shopping isn't likely to see any impact from the
typical post-holiday shopping slump. Almost 60 percent of the
people questioned indicated they would shop more online this year.
In fact, 10 percent indicated they will shop less in retail stores
in 1999.
