The Japanese pc sales in 96 has been out in:

nytsyn.com

Apple's performance is not bad at all. It sold around 825,000 units,
which is about 21% of the whole Apple and clones yearly sale volumes.
This country has $39,000 US dollars per capita income and the pc
grewth seems outpace US's. Akia, a company has been stepping to sell
Apple clone lincensing from IBM, which would help boost Apple sales
in 97. As long as the Apple's new OS is developed smoothly and
delivered on schedule, Japan's Apple market should be intact or
growing for Apple. However, Apple should have a strategic plan to
boost sales not only for itself but also for clones via increasing
Apple market share of total pc sales.

There is another news regarding Apple's PowerBook sales:

macworld.com

It is hoped that Apple could correct the components shortage problem as
soon as possible to keep the customers happy as well as to remove this
longlasting backlog issue.
