Jeff -

But I remember watching the news at night and seeing the people in the cities waiting in long lines for gas. The hysteria some of these Y2K nuts will cause could lead us into a similar situation.

Bingo... makes for fine news coverage showing long gas lines... what's an editor to do? Show a empty gas station with a car pulling up every 5 minutes or so... mighty dull.

That's why media is so critical in driving Y2K panic... they're far more interested in "heading for the hills with guns" stories than "I'm working away getting out these invoices just like always."

Unfortunately the media (particularly TV) needs DRAMATIC stuff. Life as usual ("Gee looks like someone double posted 3000 accounts last night just like they did last quarter...looks like we have a long night ahead of us.") just isn't exciting enough for the evening news.

It's a serious problem. Unfortunately, unless you're intimately involved with computers, they're pretty dull, lifeless bloobs. Hard to do good TV images. So TV resorts to the extremes... & most viewers can't tell the difference between reality (way dull) & an over active editors imagination.

Unfortunately I predict Y2K coverage will get way worse in the media.

- David
