A few observations for your consideration --

Voice Quality of Iridium vs. Globalstar:

Keep in mind that the nominal voice data rate to be used on Globalstar (while not 13 Kbps) will be higher than the 2.4 Kbps that Iridium employs; Thus, the voice quality may be noticably better if the voice processing algorithm is as good or better ; Iridium uses a specially optimized version of the AMBE algorithm and it does sound very good for such a modest data rate;

Potential Military Applications:

While both these LEO systems will find selective application in the military, (believe the AF Lt.'s comment is an overstatement ), Iridium is NOT likely to " change the way we do business" until/unless the cost of calls come down dramatically; Large scale replacement of current military comm. equipments with Iridium phones would "break the bank" with phone bills; Thus, for the time being they are likely to serve mostly in very selective and only supplemental peacetime roles and not for widespread use by the troops in real conflict situations.

While Globalstar will offer lower calling charges in many cases, it
has other contraints which could also limit its' military use; The most significant one is the firm requirement to locate a cumbersome gateway site in proximity to the area of operations ( which is NOT a constraint for Iridium); This raises a number of troublesome issues for military operations with regard to: security, mobility, flexibility, etc.
