They need not be. The compassion Jesus and the epistle writers called for is a classic example of "thinking globally, acting locally". Compassion at the individual/microcommunal level; is a universal trait of civilized man. Even Republicans.
To be leftist/radical, Jesus' message would hav had to contain some sort of reference to reshaping society to redistribute wealth. He almost pointedly did not do so. "Give unto Caesar...". "You will always have the poor." Jesus delicately sidestepped politics - either of revolution or of Pharisaic moral guardianship.
The collective element just isn't there. Jesus was talking to individuals. As it should be - since there is no true discipline but self-discipline.
