Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.V., who on Friday said he would offer a motion
to dismiss the case, perhaps as soon as Monday, issued a statement
calling the effort a "desperate attempt" to do an end-run around a vote on
whether or not to depose witnesses. "This latest action will only
exacerbate the already deepening tensions between the House and the
Senate," he said.
