But what if you buy at the bid and sell at the ask as opposed to buying the ask and selling at the bid. You more than make up for commissions unless you're buying a few shares or using a full service broker. Over the long haul the market has to be seen as a positive sum game ... with the upward movement and the fact most people tend to go long in the market. If you're saying it's a negative sum game then it seems you're saying that the "averge" persons account would lose value over time. If that was the case why would anyone invest in a negative sum game ... that'd be like trying to beat the house in Vegas when your odds are less than 50% in some cases.
