Yes. Note that CSCO and NTAP were founded on the same appliance sort of idea. When CSCO was founded, most routing was done by unix computers that were running routing software. Doing that now is for the most part considered silly, and routing is performed by specialized appliances. Similarly, when NTAP was founded, most network storage was done by computers with big hard drives.........

The interesting parallel here is about 100 yrs ago, electric motors were sold as all-purpose devices. You would buy an electric motor, and then buy the appropriate attachments/kits to make it do what you want, for each task. You'd carry the motor around from place to place, putting on the appropriate attachments. Then motors became cheaper and appliances came along -- blenders, washing machines, whatever. No more one all-purpose motor. Could the same be true of CPUs? Hmm.
