Richard.

The fact that Unitec is porting Unitec GOld to Java is good news. THis means that they will be able to run in PC and in UNIX world. Their bigger customers are running enterprise systems and Unitec probably looks Mickey-Mouse with a PC application for such mission critical operations. An additional attraction to coding in Java is that Unitec will only have to maintain one library of software, rather than one for PCs and one for UNIX/NT systems. (I trust they will code in such a way that the software will run on both Unix and NT). THis is what I would focus on, rather than the Sun developer thing. I think that just adds a little distinction for the engineers who will be going to Sun to do the work. At the same time, I trust they will find out all they can about Jini, which Sun is launching this week. With John's inventiveness, there may be ways to incorporate Jini's features in Unitec SCADA systems, but I'm only guessing here. Jini migh just be LAN-based.

Anyway, IMO the real importance of the release is that Unitec will be able to offer some enterprise level applications and that is probably seen as necessary for them to be taken seriously by some customers.

Stuart.
