Patrick, I am a novice trader (since October 98 I have a little over a hundred trades) and I use Datek. When I first started with them their service was spotty because they were upgrading everything, but apparently they have redesigned their software and server farm so that now I get great service. They have a realtime streamer that you can put streaming quotes across the screen. Their charges are $9.99 a trade.

Previous to choosing Datek I tried Jack White and Waterhouse for several months, bad news in both cases. I don't know what rating system will be used to evaluate brokers from best to worst, but these guys have to be at the bottom of any list. They ran the gambit from poor business practices to poor execution on trades. Jack White suspended me for three months from electronic trading because I bought and sold the same stock several times in the same day out of the same pot of money! They said that because of SEC rules I would only be allowed to place trades with a broker at a higher price during the suspension. I let my feet do the walking. Waterhouse tried the same thing so I walked to Datek and so far it has been a positive experience.
