Frustrated AOL Customers Get Relief (and 45-Minute Ax); Company's Troubles Continue
With a handful of class-action suits still pending, America Online skirted consumer fraud action threatened by 37 states, agreeing to refund fees to customers who couldn't log on. Company also pledged to cease advertising during February and freeze membership at current level until logjam remedied. Latest quagmire resulted from switch to flat-rate, all-you-can-eat pricing. AOL didn't have capacity to meet demand but signed people up anyway. Now must come up with millions for refunds, millions to improve infrastructure. And put up with another uproar from angry users whose "unlimited service" now means they will be asked to leave after 45 minutes-when (and if) they manage to log on. Our take: The ship's full of water and the life raft is springing a leak
