Paul,

Nice piece of math! You can bet that Maxtor is going to maximize its KM advantage on every single platter drive design, double platter drive design, triple platter drive design and so on....

My understanding is that one of the first things Hyundai did even before it got full control of Maxtor in early 1996 was to put the manufacturing operations in the hands of a group of IBM and HMTT engineers recruited to shepherd the company through the restructuring and expansion. I think they even recently added a Seagate veteran to head its recording head (MR) operations. A lot of people from the moneylosing old regime were laid off as well. New seasoned blood. New state of the art equipment. New Maxtor. Now let's see if they can execute.

P.S. FWIW category: Last April, 1996, a unit of Hyundai was the first to come out with a MPEG-2 decoder chip, an essential part of its plans to eventually make all the components of a DVD. It was, however,
increasingly stymied by the extremely short supply of engineers and its inability to offer competitive option-laden compensation packages. After all, it is extremely difficult to link a pay package to the performance of a huge global conglomerate like Hyundai. So Hyundai spun of its subsidiary into an independent unit called ODEUM Microlectronics, and with the promise of an eventual IPO, was able to make its compensation packages as option-laden as the rest of the industry. I found it interesting that Maxtor is structured similarly.
