It's a bargoon! Salter New Media launches online auctions at www.bargoon.com
HALIFAX, Jan. 19 /CNW/ - Salter New Media announced today the consumer response to its latest Internet product, Bargoon.com, an on-line auction site for virtual shoppers. Launched in Halifax on January 15, bargoon.com is the first Internet auction site to focus exclusively on local markets. Within 5 days of Bargoon.com's launch, online registrants to the site increased 20-fold from 25 to 500. Salter New Media's roll out plans include a Toronto launch on February 20 and a Boston launch shortly thereafter. ''The power of the Internet is the ability of the content or service provider to access the consumer directly -- without an intermediator,'' says Catherine Tait, President of Salter New Media. ''Salter New Media's approach is to produce Internet content and services for local markets, to build brand loyalty from the ground up and to replicate these services in markets across Canada and the United States.'' Bargoon.com provides a virtual shopping service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that combines the advantages of classified ads and the price sensitivity and excitement of an auction. Unlike other auction sites like ebay.com that are not localized, Bargoon.com allows buyers to go out and ''kick the tires'' before finalizing a deal. Vendors include individuals with single items to sell and retail businesses with multiple products in stock. Each listing on the site can include a photo, as well as a detailed description and delivery information. To kick off the site, categories listed on Bargoon.com include computers and accessories, copiers, consumer electronics, sports collectibles, jewelry, rare books, health and fitness products, automobiles and more. Bargoon.com is the creation of Salter New Media, an affiliate of Salter Street Films and MT&T. Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Salter New Media Limited is a division of Salter Street Films Limited, in partnership with Maritime Telephone & Telegraph Co. Ltd. (MT&T). Salter New Media was launched in August 1998 to develop and produce original content for the Internet. Its other products to date include the satirical news site 22online.com and Canadian-Investor.com, both of which provide new content daily. Salter Street Films is an integrated entertainment company that develops, produces and distributes original film and television programming as well as content for the Internet. Salter Street's television programs include the award-winning and top-rated comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes, the family drama series Emily of New Moon (a co-production with CINAR Films Inc.), the science fiction series LEXX (a co-production with TiMe Medienvertriebs GmbH).
