Santiago, Yes Saddam Hussein is taking advantage of Bill Clinton's political weakness- but invade Kuwait? No can do. Lack of resources and don't forget that a couple of US Marine battalions are entrenched in northern Kuwait. And Saddam does not have the money, resources to carry on another extended war in the Arabian Peninsula.

Has Saddam developed or has Russia given Saddam nuclear weapons? Probably not. Does he have pretty potent chemical weapons? Yes, but not enough to defeat an alliance superior in conventional weaponry.

Are Belgrade and Baghdad linked? Yes but in exactly the opposite way IMO as described in the article. We still area at work dismantling the former Soviet Empire. Belgrade and Baghdad are two critical links in that chain in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Has anyone ever stopped to wonder why we are dictating to Yugoslavia to let its various republics go free? Remember that these lands are part of the sovereign State of Yugoslavia! What if China came to us and said respect the State of Texas' wishes to be a free and independent nation? That's essentially what we are doing in Kosovo....

Yes our Air Forces in particular have been degraded during the Clinton Administration. Thousands of US Air Force pilots have resigned as a vote of no confidence in the current US Leadership. As a result our remaining veteran pilots have to fly more hours, and more risky missions.

On that I agree- we can't take on Belgrade and Baghdad simultaneously. We need our NATO allies to assist. Since Germany benefits the greatest economically politically, and militarily from the realignment in the Balkans, I say let's see some German Troops/Luftwaffe down in the Balkans.

Heck just last week on Interstate 20 I passed a caravan of 14 German Army 155 mm Self-Propelled Howitzers all decked out with German Army insignia and National Markings being transported on a fleet of 14 semi flatbeds probably to Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas.

Let's put the Germans into this since they are now the dominant European power and they are no strangers to the Balkans having fought there twice in the 20th Century already.....

But all of this is all the more reason to hurry through the Impeachment Process and focus on important issues. Belgrade and Baghdad see an opportunity? To do what? Cause more death and destruction? It just seems crazy to me....

Sincerely,

Doug F.

PS. BTW if you ever drive by Fort Hood south of Dallas get off of Interstate 35, and go on the Farm-to-Market Road to the west side of the Fort. Usually the US Army practices artillery fire combined with M-1 Tank, and Bradley APC maneuvers there pretty reguarly where you can see them from the road- fascinating to pulloff and watch. When the 155mm artilley open up the ground literally shakes....
