WHY FUNDS LOVE AOL?

AOL lifted a lot of funds above the S&P index benchmark last year to the detriment of the index fund holders. Before it was added to the S&P index, funds who did not own AOL didn't have much to lose. If the index funds didn't have it then, then it was still an even ball game. BUt now that it's part of the index, I could feel the pain these not-too-sold-on-AOL fund managers are having. They hate to buy it at these levels but they just have to, in order to keep the playing field level. Sometimes, in order to beat the index, you just buy its top performers and discard the laggards. And to think that we pay these guys 1% of the fund assets.
