Michael: Have you worked out any rule-of-thumb guidelines on COMPAQ daily volume, to be able to guess what kind of volume day it's going to be: 1st hour, by noon, by 3 p.m. - that sort of thing.

I know there is underlying concern about China. There is a lot of China expertise in Europe and especially London. Experts have been opining that China will not devalue. Over the weekend a newspaper of a Chinese state institution suggested the opposite and this caused consternation in the Asia markets overnight. But the Chinese government denied the essence of the story.

Usually when a government denies that it is going to devalue, you can bank on the opposite being true. It is an invariable step in an inexorable process. But the Chinese are different, usually. There are many good reason why they should not devalue and most expert think that these hard economic reasons will prevail. In addition, this is an important year for the Chinese - 50 years after the revolution - and not the time for devaluation.
