in viewing your reply and other responses it is increasingly clear to me how much I don't know.

Same here. I often learn most by posting and then being corrected. (I was basing my response on Web browser Secure Socket Layer encryption standards). Obviously heavy duty e-commerce needs to be more secure than that.
