After an attack by right to privacy groups, Intel is withdrawing its identification features in the new chips, according to the NY Times online (you'll need a password):

I think this is a good thing, both because the application unnecessarily gave out the user's location, because I don't think the information released would have been properly screened by the user, and because it wasn't reliable enough.

This development is, however, a dramatic example of Ratman at work.
