Hi Paul - I read your previous post regarding your interest to meet with Novell marketing regarding your input for Kayak and discussing some of your marketing ideas. I was a bit dissapointed to hear that as a shareholder they said to talk to Mr. Troop but I can understand their response.

As a shareholder, I would like this pursued with Mr. Troop and perhaps he can put you in contact with key responsible management contacts in your area. I often talk directly to the head office with suggestions and referrals and many times visit the company directly. I introduce myself and state my expectations for the company and bring to the company an outsider's perspective (1) as an owner (shareholder) and investor and (2) share some of my ideas and observations regarding products, marketing and competition.

Many of the companies I deal with are much smaller but in all cases I end up developing very good relationships with management and receive very positive feedback. I believe it also brings management back down to sea level as they begin to understand that their decisions impact individual investors and we all are trying to achieve the same results.

I have stayed away from Novell's corporate office, but perhaps a visit with Mr. Troop is in order. To defend Mr. Troop's position, you must understand that disclosure laws and current litigation frenzy makes it difficult for him to detail (in specifics) forward looking statements that may be viewed as fact rather than management's expectations.

Bottom line, I hope the 'customer' has better results than you had regarding product suggestions, feedback and product enhancements. ALL SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES LISTEN AND RESPOND TO CUSTOMER FEEDBACK AND INQUIRIES! Novell should be no different. This should also pertain to sharholders suggestions as well.

To summarize, Perhaps a direct request to Mr. Troop (which I can deliver in person) requesting a meeting with the responsible small business sales divisional manager in your territory, so you can outline your Small Business market findings and observations. You might prepare a summary of marketing suggestions for the KAYAK product (these need to be detailed in writing) for management's review and action. Mr. Troop can provide us the key contacts here in San Jose and back East so we can be assured that your material is received.

We do not need an immidiate response but rather begin to develop a better understanding of Novell's product offering strategy. From time to time, we can then provide these 'Key' personnel our perspective of how the market (ie. Internet online community, trade press and other publications) views this developing product strategy as an outsider looking in. This provides another source of feedback for management to see if their specific marketing strategy is working and is perceived correctly.

Who knows, if we get enough feedback and input from this forum, this approach may open up a whole new way of thinking about product 'networking'! Let me know what you think (you too Joe) and I will try to help here on my end.
