Computer Learning's Maryland Students Lose Veteran's Benefits

Fairfax, Virginia, Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S.
Department of Veteran's Affairs halted payments to students of
Computer Learning Centers Inc.'s Laurel, Maryland, campus, citing
the state's ''notice of deficiencies'' sent to the national chain
of trade schools in October.
Maryland threatened to revoke Computer Learning's license
because of numerous violations, including ''grossly deficient''
student records and admitting students who failed entrance exams.
It fined the company $80,000 and suspended the trade school's
authorization to enroll students using veteran's benefits until
the violations were corrected.
''There is no provision for the continuation of payments to
those currently enrolled,'' wrote Celia Dollarhide, Director of
Education Service for the Veterans Benefits Administration to the
Maryland Higher Education Commission in a letter dated Jan. 12.
A spokesman for the company said company officials plan to
meet with Maryland officials this week. Computer Learning also
remains under scrutiny by state regulators in Texas and Illinois,
and federal regulators in Virginia.
Last month, it was ordered to offer refunds to about 200
students admitted to its Houston school even though they failed
admissions exams. It was also forced to suspend marketing at its
Schaumburg, Illinois, campus because of ''numerous ongoing
deficiencies'' discovered by regulators in that state.
