Well, I did it. I ate kimchee at lunch today, at Lucky World. It was - - ok. Really. If you like pickled cabbage doused in red pepper oil and garlic. I feel pretty brave.
My car is acting up, so Chris took me to George Mason to register for spring classes, and we had lunch at Lucky World. After lunch, we looked around, trying to decide whether, in fact, Korean food is the most alien cuisine imaginable. I still think it is. On the salad bar tables were such delicacies as "pollock entails." Query: was it in fact "entrails." I think so. Also, vats of tiny liquid pink shrimp. Also, vats of green clam parts. Not to mention vats of shredded, dried seasoned anchovies. Shredded, dried jelly fish, which looks kinda like easter basket grass.
It gets stranger. On the meat counter, pork uteri. Pork "bungs." What is that? No, don't tell me. I think I know.
But, wait, it gets stranger: beef pizzles. Maybe 2 - 3 feet long, white, coiled up.
I think this is right up there with slugs in beer. In fact, if slugs taste anything like snails, then I'll happily munch them, as long as they are served with garlic butter. But, I draw the line at beef pizzle. Funny, I'll eat beef tongue, beef heart, even beef tripe. I can't reconcile it. |
