Lucent, Applied Materials, ASM Lithography In Devt Deal

MURRAY HILL, N.J. (Dow Jones)--Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU), Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) and ASM Lithography Holding NV (ASMLF) plan to collaborate on Scalpel electron beam lithography technology.

In a press release Monday, Lucent said the technology, invented in 1989 by Bell Labs, uses an electron beam source instead of a light source to pattern semiconductor chips.

Lucent said it believes Scalpel technology will allow the migration of chip technology to 50-nanometer applications, compared with the 250-nanometer features currently available on most transistors.

Applied Materials supplies wafer fabrication systems.

ASM Lithography supplies wafer steppers and step-and-scan systems.
