New Integrated Third-Party Solutions Allow Visio Technical Users to Link
Intelligent P&IDs to 3-D Plant Models and Knowledge-based Engineering
Systems For the Fastest Route From Business Case to Finished Plant

HOUSTON, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) announced
today at the DaratechPlant '99 Conference the availability of new third-party
software solutions for the process plant industry that interact with its 2-D technical
diagramming tool, Visio(R) Technical 5.0 Plus. Developed by Cadcentre of
Cambridge, United Kingdom, and ICARUS Corp. of Rockville, Md., these new
vertical solutions complement and extend the new process plant engineering
functionality introduced in Visio Technical 5.0 Plus that allows for the easier
creation, exchange and storage of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
and process flow diagrams (PFDs). Available now, Visio Technical 5.0 Plus
provides solution developers within the process plant industry with a platform for
extending intuitive, intelligent P&ID functionality into sophisticated plant design and
specification applications.

"By giving plant engineers and designers greater flexibility in how they design and
document the functionality of their processes, Visio is changing the way in which
2-D design vendors will be measured in terms of their impact on the process plant
industry," said John Forbes, vice president and general manager of technical
products at Visio. "The intelligence in P&ID diagrams created with Visio Technical
5.0 Plus greatly facilitates leveraging that design data into higher-end tools used in
the plant design and development process. As vertical solutions providers in the
process plant industry adopt the Visio diagramming format as a starting point in the
design process, engineers increasingly will find Visio Technical to be a logical
choice for everyday creation and storage of 2-D process plant documentation."

Cadcentre's Plant Design Management System

Cadcentre, a leading supplier of design solutions for the process industries, has
developed PDMS PE-Direct, a new front-end loading solution. Visio Technical
customers working in the conceptual phase of plant design can now quickly and
easily transfer designs from their P&ID designs directly into the Cadcentre's
PDMS 3-D environment. "Combining the power of Visio Technical as a 2-D
technical diagramming tool with the strength of Cadcentre's 3-D modeling and
visualization capabilities delivers significant gains over current practice and breaks
new ground in ease of use," said Peter Littleton, president of Cadcentre Inc. "The
intuitive interface and sophisticated external-data-linking capabilities will make
Visio Technical a key component of our standard engineering desktop for process
engineering."

Knowledge-based Engineering

ICARUS Corp. is a 30-year pioneer in knowledge-based engineering within the
process plant industry. Its products are based on a software technology called
Kbase, a compilation of best practices and rules-based expert systems for process
plant design, specification and project management. Visio Technical's capabilities
are linked to the Kbase technology to help users graphically visualize the elements
of complex plant-related projects. ICARUS will also integrate Visio functionality
into other Kbase-based solutions to automatically generate designs, schedules and
costs of the plant-related projects.

"Kbase is the result of 28 years of process plant-related knowledge, and we're
using Visio Technical to give users more choices in how they want to extract and
package that knowledge," said Doug McCue, manager of research and
development at ICARUS. "The combination of Icarus's experience in developing
project management tools that incorporate the best practices of disciplined
process plant engineering with Visio Technical's programmability, ease of use and
deep process plant drawing content will result in better, faster decision-making by
our users. Process plant design and management is a complex process, and our
customers will benefit from enhanced analysis and visualization tools that give them
project information in a more comprehensible format."

About Visio Technical 5.0 Plus

Visio Technical 5.0 Plus provides a faster and more intuitive way of creating
PFDs, P&IDs and datasheets than is possible using traditional CAD applications.
