Today (1/25) after the close, JUPITER COMMUNICATIONS reported the following:

- online auctions will yield $7.1 billion over 4 yrs

- the research firm said in a statement that online retailers need to embrace auctions as a new platform for discounts as online business-to-consumer auctions will move $3.2 billion worth of merchandise annually by 2002.

- that the interactive sales format will provide online retailers with better results in liquidating excess inventory than traditional fixed-price discounting.

- online auction buyers in the United States will grow to 6.5 million in 2002 from 1.2 million in 1998, representing 11 percent of the total online shopping population in 2002.

- online retailers that take advantage of auctions will benefit from higher repeat-visit and purchase rates and greater promotional value, said Jupiter analyst Nicole Vanderbilt in the statement.

- during this year, business-to-consumer auctions will move beyond limited technology product offerings to a more diverse product mix and the availability of merchandise such as toys and apparel will attract a more mass-market consumer to the interactive sales format.

- companies that have focused on an online auction format such as UBid Inc. (Nasdaq:UBID - news) and eBay Inc.(Nasdaq:EBAY - news) have seen their stock prices in recent months amid Internet retailing frenzy.
