The standard format for the cable signal is a 6Mhz TV channel. One of these is used for the downlink and one at below 50MHz (below the bottom of the TV band) for the uplink. The principal limitation that determines how much data can flow through the 6MHz pipe is the signal-to-noise ratio that is standardized for good TV reception by the cable industry. With present modulation techniques, that limits the downlink to around 50-60 MBits/second, not quite a 100 BaseT data rate. Becase of noise ingress problems, the data rate for the uplink is considerably lower (if you are interested in the technical issues, see the scientific atlanta web page). With the Motorola Cybersurfer modems which are common nowadays, the downlink is 10-30 MBits/sec and the uplink is 600kBits/sec. BTW, I've done OK investing in SFA to date. In fact, I think that the real money will end up in the cable network upgrades before it ends up in the ATHM revenues.
