>>>Party! You are deserting your constituents when you say <<I can't wait till ecommerce begins closing down the malls>><<<

Nope. Life will be easier for 'em!

>>>Will you then have the time for the helpful, friendly human clerks and sales staff, each of whom is a member and integral part of the fabric of your community, and their families, whose jobs have been displaced to cheaper central warehouses near Fedex hubs in Tennessee and Texas ... or do you expect that they will be cheerily selling popcorn at your grey set slo-pitch games?<<<

Er, that's modified and slo-pitch softball games. See solution at bottom of this post.

>>>No, the coming displacement, if it happens, will not be pretty ... it may happen, but it is not for me to wish for or hasten it ... that is why I advocate use of the Amazon site as a research tool, while at the same time buying the researched book from my local storefront merchant with a smile and a how-de-do about her kids ... am I in the vanguard of an early net counterculture?<<<

Your statement reminds me of my many friends who said they'd never buy a computer, and who now find themselves addicted to them. Since my income is derived from computer work, I at least never made such a comment.

>>>Next I may comparison shop at BFL, or better, at some site which carries multiple brands in each product class, check out all the brand specs and so on without burdening the sales staff of my local shops, who can't possibly keep up with the blizzard of changing products, and then buy from the local merchants with their handy return policies at my doorstep ... better than trying to stuff that insulation back in the carton and shipping it to Warehousia, Ut.<<<

Yes, by all means, support your local candy store. You still got penny candy up in Canada? I remember when I was up there I went to a soda machine and punched the Ginger Ale button. I didn't get Canada Dry, which is what we get down here; I got America Dry, which is what you get up there. Don't worry, Drifter, displacement can exist so long as there is a viable education and job training system to assist in the replacement of industries impacted by technology changes. But let's do all of this by implementing my solution below:

SOLUTION: You ready for this one? Let's call it: Life is more than just a walk in the park in this country or that country.

Put time on a redundant computer system and maybe assign a worldwide timekeeper, just to keep the record straight. Then change our 24-hour day cycle into 30-hour day cycles. Make the work requirement only four days instead of five days. We'd do 10 hours of work each day; have 10 hours for rest and leisure; and 10 hours to party! Plus, this now gives us 90 hours off for weekends--enough time for a person to actually go somewhere special and do something special. Make wages respectable across the board, with flex time, child care, etc.; encourage cottage industry and small business, but make certain kinds of work, the difficult stuff, very rewardable. Make sure everyone has access to food, shelter, clothing, health care and education (Get rid of the IRS and a) institute a national lottery; b) legalize marijuana and tax it; c) create an inheritance bank where inheritance money gets pooled, thereby drawing great interest, and then the heir can take interest-free loans from the bank in the amount that was bequeathed (if not paid back by death, there becomes a limit to what you can present to the next heir--it's very complicated, but it could work in modern times); and d) start up a baby raffle where the winner and the child split the prize, the child getting a Zulu stock certificate which it can't redeem until college age).

There, Drifter. That ought to keep you busy! (LOL)
