Howie, this is purely conjecture on my part, but the timing of the announcement could very well have nothing to do with earnings, to be announced tomorrow. Instead, the timing could be purely due to the likelihood of a news leak, especially now that we know MSFT is involved in the Alta Vista equation. It is much better for CPQ to schedule a meeting for the announcement the day before earnings than to schedule a meeting for next week then have the announcement made for them, way before the meeting, through, "Unnamed sources."

For all we know, CPQ could very well have wanted to schedule the announcement at another date but scheduled it for today after being tipped-off the news was going to be leaked.
