Headline: Sterling Software Announces VISION:Clearaccess 6.1 With Enhanced Job
Scheduling and Report Sharing Capabilities for DB2

======================================================================
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 1999--

Extends Heterogeneous Database Support by Allowing
DB2 End Users Greater Access to Information With
Reports That Can be Flexibly Scheduled

Sterling Software Inc.'s (NYSE:SSW) Information Management
Division, a leading provider of business intelligence and data
warehousing software, Tuesday announced the release of
VISION:Clearaccess 6.1 with enhanced heterogeneous database support
for DB2 running on Windows NT, Solaris, OS/2, HP/UX and AIX.
VISION:Clearaccess 6.1 provides an interface to the Job Server
embodied in the accompanying release of VISION:Clearmanage 6.1 which
allows flexible advanced scheduling of scripts and queries.
VISION:Clearaccess provides corporate PC users with a powerful
tool for quickly and easily accessing information they need to make
strategic business decisions. For business users who require reports
at regular intervals, such as daily sales and inventory reports, the
enhanced Job Server within VISION:Clearmanage allows end users to set
a report to run at a specific time or on a regular basis.
Scheduled scripts for producing reports can be set to run daily,
weekly, or at any interval the user requires, such as once every 12 or
72 hours. The scheduled scripts can run unattended, so sales managers,
for example, would have reports on overnight sales ready to review the
next morning.
Furthermore, the scheduler can be set up so reports are shared
among users who need information, avoiding the redundancy of different
users executing the same complex queries. This reduces the total load
on database servers and increases the responsiveness of the system.
"The ability to automatically schedule queries and reports makes
it easier for business users to obtain information needed for
strategic decision making," stated Carole Morton, president of
Sterling Software's Information Management Group.
"The expanded capabilities in the new releases of
VISION:Clearaccess and VISION:Clearmanage provide end users with
greater control over the timely availability of required information."

VISION:Clearaccess
VISION:Clearaccess allows departmental end users, including those
with no SQL experience, to access information in heterogeneous
mainframe and client/server databases and create custom reports on
their PC desktop computers.
With the help of "wizards," users can build and distribute
information ranging from simple queries to complex charts and
multi-dimensional views of their business. They can perform data
slicing, add dimensions and create and share other types of custom
functions for use in ad hoc analysis.

VISION:Clearmanage
VISION:Clearmanage enables IT professionals to help business
users obtain information they need without overtaxing the database
system and suffering frustrating delays in obtaining critical reports.
The features within VISION:Clearmanage allow the IT department to
create profiles of individual users and groups of users to ensure
appropriate boundaries are set specifying who can access what data and
when they can run queries.
VISION:Clearmanage helps IT professionals manage information flow
in order to avoid system performance issues that arise when various
users schedule complex queries at the same time.
