Sony (6758) Develops Lithium-Ion Polymer Battery

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Corp. announced Monday that it has developed and will begin marketing a lithium-ion polymer battery with an energy density about 10% greater than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Sony plans to start shipping samples in March to cellular-telephone manufacturers for 4,500 yen per unit. The company expects to be producing 1 million units monthly by the end of the year.

The new battery uses a gel form of polymer electrolyte in place of battery electrolyte.
